Abstract:

Adler called his theory ‘Individual Psychology’ partly to distinguish it from Freudian psychoanalysis. Like Freud, Adler had a model of the human personality on which his practice of therapy was based. This was evolved over a working life.

Abstract:

Still by far the best overall account of Adler's Individual Psychology can be found in Ellenberger's The Discovery of the Unconscious (1970). Invariably, most accounts of the origins and evolution of dynamic psychology is still marred by the polemic and the rivalry between the two Viennese founding fathers of modern psychotherapy. It is perhaps to be expected that, due to the personalities of Freud and Adler on the one hand, and their powerfully different conceptions of human nature on the other, such differences have been reproduced from one generation of adherents to the next. Of course, these two rival schools were competing not just for influence, but also for survival as refugees following the rise of fascism in Germany and Austria between 1933 and 1938 (Hoffman: 1994).

Abstract:

So what is Socratic dialogue, and how can I convey its use, as an Adlerian practitioner, to readers of Self and Society. After some ‘Socratic dialogue’ with myself, I have decided initially to outline my understanding of Socrates' method, then to look at how Adler's approach links with this, followed by some examples of Socratic questioning in practice.

Abstract:

I will omit the early years to avoid boring the reader and begin with my education. I started school at the usual age of six; it was a rural school in Minnesota. The first morning I trotted the mile and a half to the building. It was the most terrifying period of my life. I couldn't learn to read; arithmetic was a mystery and spelling even worse. Another boy completed homework for me. The teacher said she didn't know I was so advanced and gave me harder work. This incident plagued me all my life—people who were kind and helpful to me made my life more difficult.
