An Enquiry into Direct Experience: Authentic Movement and the Five Skandhas
Author: Linda Hartley

Abstract:

My questioning about what it means to experience life directly—not filtered through a haze of expectations, memories, projections, fantasies, fears, beliefs about how things are, or should be—but directly and simply as it presents itself to me in this moment, has grown from many years of engagement with Buddhist meditation and T'ai Chi Ch'uan, Body-Mind Centering and Authentic Movement. The first two, ancient, well-worn paths, invite my mind to rest in the present moment, in my body, in this place. The latter, both innovative disciplines developed within the contemporary field of bodymind exploration, offer methods to explore the dialogue between form and meaning, the interface of matter with consciousness, within a spirit of acceptance and ongoing enquiry.

The Pearl Catcher

Abstract:

If you look outside, you shall see people walking around. How many of them are carrying their body with respect, honouring who they are? How many look crouched, tensed or fearful? Some people may seem to be hooked up, locked in bodily patterns of holding in, of hiding—of not daring to be themselves. How can we free more life? How can we go deeper? For me, the process of going inside and finding shared spaces is one possible and exciting way to do so. In the process of body-hypnotherapy, when you come back into your body, you also find that you are not alone. Finding magic, hope and future. Coming into the flesh is awakening the soul, the mother of pearls.

Abstract:

It's a measure of our isolation—well, mine—from the Muslim world that when I was advised to read The Cairo Trilogy', by Naguib Mahfouz, I found that this 90-year-old writer, of whom I'd never heard, is a Nobel Prize Laureate. The Trilogy was completed in 1957. The Prize was awarded in 1988; only then did work begin on translation from Arabic into English. This appeared in 1991.
