Abstract:

One of the first books I ever read on education was Summerhill by A.S. Neill. He started a school in the late 1920's that became world famous. It was founded on the principle that pupils, even from a very young age, were quite capable of being self directing. This was not lip service or theory, and one of the manifestations of this policy was that children were allowed to choose whether to go to lessons or not. Neill's trust in children was absolute and must have reflected his trust in himself. I was smitten.

Abstract:

I have been a teacher since the early seventies and it is only in the last few years I have truly understood the spiritual nature of my work. You may organise and deliver the curriculum in as many brilliant ways as is possible, but what will influence children for life will be your courage, energy, vibrancy and ability to rise above the everyday emotional hurts of the classroom in other words your spirit. If we want our children to grow up with the ability to be nurturing, compassionate and wise then we must recognise the part that teachers play in this process as it is an intensely important one.

The Work of Parker Palmer

Abstract:

In this short article I would like to introduce you to the work of Parker Palmer, an American educator whose books have inspired me in my research on supporting teachers. He does not concentrate so much on external support, but focuses on the inner life of the teacher. I will, for the most part, be drawing on his most famous book The Courage to Teach and his latest one A Hidden Wholeness.
